Fremont National Forest remains virtually undiscovered by hikers,
mountain bikers, horseback riders and other outdoor enthusiasts. The
US Forest Service has cabins, like the one to the left, for rent for
those who want to experience waking up on the very edge of Winter
Ridge.
Walk or ride under the blue sky through meadows that have
browned with the recent summer heat; pass through aspen groves or
stands of giant ponderosa pines. Enjoy rock roses and penstemon
along rock
ridges in rimrock canyons that seem to appear out of nowhere in the
desolate appearing landscape.
Just north of Thompson Reservoir, the USFS is putting in a
new trail system which will contain hundreds of miles of trails.
Along the way will be horse camps for anybody who wants to take
their horse with them! Ride through the high desert country and feel
the cool autumn breezes as you and your horse move together across
the lava strewn meadows.
Watch for bald eagles, Canada geese, coots, yellow-headed
blackbirds, goshawks, hermit thrushes, red-tail hawks and great blue
herons. You may catch a glimpse of mule deer, mountain lions, Rocky
Mountain elk, black bear, porcupines, and coyotes.
When you come across a high desert stream, let your horse
cool off for a moment while you inhale the scents and enjoy the low
sunlight adding striking colors to the fall scenery! Ask the folks
at The Lodge for more information on horseback riding in the area.
They are working with the US Forest Service to make the Fremont
National Forest a great place to visit!
